# Using a scanner

### Using Scanners with Monolith Labels

Custom Monolith labels can include a barcode or QR code that identifies the item being scanned.

When the printed code is scanned in Monolith, the corresponding evidence item can be located without manually searching for the evidence number.

### Using a Scanner During an Audit

Scanners are especially useful when physically auditing evidence.

During an audit, scan the barcode or QR code on each evidence item as you work through the physical inventory. Monolith uses the scanned identifier to locate the matching evidence record and verify the item as part of the audit process.

This can reduce manual searching and make it easier to reconcile physical evidence with the items recorded in Monolith.
